US Navy Veteran - 24 Years, Chief Boatswain Mate, Vietnam 1964-1968 Brown Water River Rat
Barry "Boats" Wayne Johnson passed away on April 27, 2017 at the age of 73. He was a well-respected man who was born in Osceola, Wisconsin and was predeceased by his father, Lawrence Johnson and his mother, Elvira Johnson. He retired from the United States Navy after 24 years of service as a Chief Boatswain mate in 1988. He was a Vietnam Veteran and spent 4 years as a Brown Water River Rat from 1964 to 1968. After retirement from the Navy he worked as a rigger for the Army Corp of Engineers repairing dams. He and his wife moved to Brandon, FL in 2002 and he made a big impact on the community. He is the last of the 4 founding fathers of AMVETS Post 26 to pass away and a Charter Member. He served as Past Commander of AMVETS Post 26, Member of the Grievance Committee of AMVETS Department of Florida; belonged to the Nam Knights Westside Motorcycle Club, Moose Lodge of Brandon, Valrico Eagles FOE # 3566 and Lifetime Member of AMVETS Post 26 of Dover, FL and VFW of Puyallup, WA.
He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Susan; 3 Children, Eric (wife, Kristy) Johnson, Tanya Johnson and Cory Johnson (wife, Chelsey) Johnson; 2 step-children, Amy Gens Zink (husband, Steve), Jason Gens; 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life was held on May 13th at 2pm at AMVETS Post 26 at 221 S. Dover Rd., Dover, FL 33527. He was buried in Osceola, WI next to his parents and grandparents.
